Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.

A man in Sheffield was arrested for buying Viagra without a prescription from a local pharmacist after he was found dispensing the drug.
The 41-year-old, who has not been named, was arrested by police after he went into a house with four other men, who were buying it at a pharmacy in South Sheffield.
The first man was identified as Paul Whelan, 48, from his first marriage and had been using the drug for the past two years.
He was charged with two counts of possession of a fake prescription drug.
He then turned himself in to a court and was jailed for a month.
The case is currently under review, but it is not known if he will be released on bail.
The man was arrested at a home in the Sheffield city centre on Friday, when the police were notified by a witness to buy a fake version of Viagra that contained a 'black box' logo and other details.
The pharmacist then bought the pills from a friend, who said he was taking them for sexual purposes.
The man told the court he was buying the drugs from a local pharmacy but he didn't believe the pharmacist had provided him with a prescription.
When he spoke to the witness, the man said: 'I'm in a position to make a decision on where I go in the next 24 hours.'
He added: 'I'm not going to make a decision at that time, I'm going to be able to say, 'What you're buying is Viagra.'
The man was being taken to the Sheffield Medical Centre and told to 'take the pills and tell the pharmacist that you are buying it from a pharmacy and they will be there to help you'.
He was then taken to the police station for questioning. His arrest is still under review.
The man is free to return to the police station and has been given bail.
